Blind Cleaning & Repairs

Blind Cleaning

Venetian Blinds

Need to be handled with care. As the vanes can easily be damaged.

Venetian Blinds come in a variety of finishes. Including Wood, Plastic and Aluminium.

Some points that are worth considering when purchasing Venetian Blinds:

  • Large blinds can be rather heavy so if possible keep them small.
  • Divide window into two or three smaller blinds rather than one large, and sliding doors into two blinds rather than one large blind.
  • For Bathrooms and kitchens go for plastic slats, as the aluminium slats could corrode from the humidity in the bathroom or kitchen.

Caring for Venetian Blinds

Clean Venetian blinds frequently to avoid dirty build up.

Use a damp soft cloth. Gently wipe each slat from the cords or ladder towards the centre. This will prevent the dust building up on and around the cords and ladders.

A pair of cotton mitts or gloves can also be used to clean Venetian blinds.

If you splash grease or cooking oil on the kitchen blinds. Using a weak solution of washing up liquid and warm water, gently clean with a damp soft cloth. Rinse well.

The slats should be in the horizontal position when raising or lowing the blind.

If you have dogs and they like to look out of the window, raise the blind enough so they don’t get tangled in the blind and damage it.

Do’s and Don’ts

  • Do not use any abrasive cleaners.
  • Do not use any bleach or products that contain bleach.
  • Do not use any produce that contains ammonia.
  • Do not use oil on the tilt mechanism.
  • Do have your Venetian Blinds clean professionally at least once a year. Clean A Blind

Vertical Blinds

Need to be handled with care. As the vanes can easily be damaged.

Vertical Blinds come in a variety of finishes. Including Fabric, Vinyl and Aluminium.

Some points that are worth considering when purchasing Vertical Blinds:

  • All blinds will fade in the sun with time.
  • If you have blinds and curtains insure there is space between the curtain and the window for the blind to operate correctly.

Caring for Vertical Blinds

Clean Vertical blinds frequently to avoid dirt build up. Especially along the tops and bottoms.

Wash the vanes at least once a year. Wash by hand and do not rub the vanes as this will damage the stiffening in the vane.

Do not wring and do not spin, it’s best to allow to drop dry.

If you splash grease or cooking oil on the kitchen blinds. Using a weak solution of washing up liquid and warm water, gently clean with a damp soft cloth. Rinse well.

The blind should be opened and closed when the vanes are in the open position, as this will put less strain on the turning mechanism .

If you have dogs and they like to look out of the window. Open the blind enough so they don’t get tangled in the blind and damage it.

Do’s and Don’ts

  • Do not use any abrasive cleaners.
  • Do not use any bleach or products that contain bleach.
  • Do not use any produce that contains ammonia.
  • Do not use oil on the track as this will seep down into the vane. Also dirt and dust will stick to the oil.
  • Do have your Vertical Blinds clean professionally at least once a year.

Wooden Blinds

Need to be treated like wooden window frames, you need to treat them on a regular basis to prevent the wood from drying out and splitting. Never use water to clean them.

Wooden Blinds come in a variety of finishes, and grades. From light oak to dark mahogany and even Bamboo, the wood finish is almost limitless. You can also get laminate finished pressed board, which again comes in a variety of finishes and colours.

Some points that are worth considering when purchasing wooden blinds:

  • They are rather heavy so if possible keep them small.
  • Divide window into two small blinds rather than one large.
  • Laminates are heavier than Base wood, so keep to the smaller sizes.
  • The wood will dry out in the sun, so look after them well, and have then cleaned and treated on a regular basis.

Caring for Wooden Blinds

Clean wood blinds frequently to avoid dirty build up. If you don’t have time for a thorough cleaning, at least dust them. Even closing the blinds and running a duster over them weekly will make a difference. Feather dusters tend to scatter dust, so use a soft cloth, wool, or “magnet” dusters. These tools will pull the dust away from the blinds, and it will collect on the surface of the duster instead of flying around the room. Take the duster outside and shake it, or brush off the surface, before attempting to use it on another set of blinds.

To keep wood blinds in excellent condition vacuum on a regular basis. Using the brush attachment on your vacuum cleaner, gently vacuum each slat, front and back. How often you should vacuum will be determined by how dusty your blinds get. A good rule of thumb, is to vacuum them at least once per month. It will be obvious if it needs to be done more frequently.

A pair of cotton mitts or gloves can also be used to clean wood blinds. Gently wipe each slat from the cords or ladder towards the centre. This will prevent the dust building up on and around the cords and ladders.

Never soak wood blinds. In fact, it is not a good idea to use water to clean them, or to get them wet at all. Once wet, wood can loose its shape and warp easily.

Do’s and Don’ts

  • Do not use a wax based furniture polish for cleaning. Wax will simply seal in the dirt.
  • Do not use water to clean them.
  • Do not use any abrasive cleaners or products.
  • Do have your Wooden Blinds clean professionally at least once a year. Clean A Blind
